The first bison have arrived to the beatiful forest in the island of Bornholm in Denmark. The seven animals, six cows and one bull, came from Bialowieza and Pszczyna in Poland. On Saturday 9th of June 2012 the Environment Minister Ida Auken opened the 200 ha enclosure for some specially invited guests.

- With help of these polish entrepreneurs, we hope to create bright forests with open meadows by letting the bison grass in the forest, and we give tourists yet another reason to visit the beatiful island of Bornholm as they will be able to see bison running freely, says Minister of the Environment Ida Auken.

Thanks to a generous donation by the Villum Foundation made it possible for the Ministry of Environment to build the enclosure in the forest of Alminingen.
30 special invited guests listened to the Minister of Environment and the releasing of the animals to the 200 ha enclosure. The project is a cooperation between Denmark and Poland. From Poland and one of the speaker was the polish Embasador Jacek Wojcikowski and Prof. Wanda Olech.
From Sweden participated Tommy Svensson,EBCC Coordinator from the regional office of Scandinavia.

The European bison will be living the first five years in these fenced 200 ha enclosure, the area will be accessible through gates. After that time the people of Bornholm will get the opportunity to decide wheter if they want to release the bison on the whole forest or if they prefer to have the bison elsewhere!
